Nobuntu Biography: A Brief Overview

Nobuntu, the all-female a cappella quartet from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, has drawn
international acclaim for their inventive performances that range from traditional
Zimbabwean folk songs to Afro Jazz to gospel. Made up of members Zanele Manhenga,
Thandeka Moyo, Duduzile Sibanda & Joyline Sibanda, the ensembles concerts are
performed with pure voices, augmented by minimalistic percussions, traditional instruments
such as the Mbira(Thumb Piano) and organic, authentic dance movements.
Nobuntu released their debut studio album, Thina in 2013. This was followed up by two
more studio albums, Ekhaya in 2015 and Obabes Bembube in 2018. With these releases,
Nobuntu has toured in Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Mozambique, the USA and multiple
European countries that include Germany, France, Austria, Italy to name a few.
Nobuntu sing original compositions and arrangements, written by the group members, they
rearrange traditional songs and re-rendition some popular music into their style of a capella
music. They form a fundamental part of the music scene in Zimbabwe and the world as they
are an all-female music group in a male dominated genre.
They have won regional and national awards, with a BAA (Bulawayo Arts Award) for Best
Female Group and a NAMA (National Arts Merit Award), the biggest awarding institution in
Zimbabwe.
